I received two books from Barefoot Books for my family to enjoy.  The first book is called The Boy Who Grew Flowers.

Written by Jen Wojtowicz
Illustrated by Steve Adams
This is such a lovely story about friendship and know matter how different a person is, friendship is always there.  This story is about a boy named Rink and yes he grows flowers.  He doesn’t grow them in a way that normal people grow them but he actually grows flowers all over himself.  After every full moon, his mother has to clip the flowers off of him before he heads off to school.  He lives with the rest of his “strange” family.  They all have special talents too.  His uncle can tame rattlesnakes and his brothers and cousins are all shapeshifters.
Rink was a quiet boy at school and didn’t talk much.  He sat in the back of the classroom and none of his other classmates never really talk to him either.  There was a new girl in his classroom named Angelina.  She wanted to talk to Rink herself and he liked her too.  She always wore a flower behind her ear and he really liked that.  She came from a dancing family and when she kept telling everyone “no” when they asked her to the school dance, he wondered why.  Rink figured it was because one of her legs was longer than the other so she couldn’t dance.  He helped her out by making her a pair of slippers that made her stand evenly and they ended up going to the dance together.  They both told each other about their secrets including the secret behind the flower behind her ear.
The illustrations are really great and I love the story.  They pictures in the book brighten up the story and keeps kids interested in the book and makes it easy for them to follow along with the story.  I think the art work in the illustrations are absolutely amazing!
The age recommendations for this book are 4 to 10 years.  It’s a great story for young ones to understand and I think it’s perfect for a 1st or 2nd grader to read by themselves.  I love how it shows kids that no matter how different a person is, they are still a person.  It’s really heartwarming and teaches kids how to help each other and make a good friend along the way.  Acceptance is valuable.  My older kids love this story and I think it’s great to have a fun, magical way for them to learn the morals of this story!
The second book that I received was Alligator Alphabet.  This book is a board book filled with animals and each letter of the alphabet.
Written and Illustrated by
Stella Blackstone and Stephanie Bauer
Alligator Alphabet is great for ages 1 to 4 years.  The text in the pages are very simple which makes it perfect for little ones especially when they get to about 3 or 4 years old.  It makes it easy for them to learn how to read the words on the pages.  I think it’s a very colorful book and I love the shapes, colors and pictures that are found inside.  Each letter on every page has an illustration of an animal that starts with that letter.  A is for alligator, B is for bear, and so forth.
Aren’t the illustrations just darling!?  I love the artistic look to the pictures.  I think it gives younger kids a more colorful experience.  I love how they can learn both the upper and lowercase of each word too.  Sometimes alphabet books leave one or the other out.  I think this book makes reading fun and our youngest absolutely adores turning the pages himself.  It’s a very durable board book that will last and makes the alphabet fun.  Learning the animals are also fun!
My kids love these books!  As a mom, they both get a big two thumbs up!
