You’ve Been Sentenced! has been the best game introduced to my family in a long time!

“Short, lumpy worms momentarily filled the field.”  Yep, that’s what I said!  This is just one example of the fun, silly sentences that you can come up with when playing the You’ve Been Sentenced! game from McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds.  This is such a fun game for the whole family to enjoy!  I was given the opportunity to work with McNeill Designs on a review and was sent one of their You’ve Been Sentenced! games for my family to play and review.

Included in this game is a 540 word deck of cards, a sand timer, pencil, score pad, and instructions.  Each card has 5 words or word combinations on them except for the wild cards.  The wild cards can be any word that you choose to make your sentence.  There are many ways to play this game but the main idea is to have all players pick 10 cards each without seeing the words on them.  After all players draw their cards, they have to come up with a complete sentence using one word or word combo from their cards.  Most of the words are 5 points while some of the more difficult words to fit in a sentence are worth 10.  The wilds cards do not have any point value so use them only when you need to!

All 10 cards do not need to be used to make a sentence but you should try to use as many as you can because the more words you use, the more points you get!  All the sententences are funny and silly and may sound a little goofy to say but that’s okay.  That’s the whole point!  The sentences do have to be grammatically correct.  You can use the timer to only have 90 seconds to come up with a sentence or play without for beginners.  After a player comes up with their sentence, the rest of the players vote on whether or not the sentence makes sense and is correctly spoken.  This makes the game that much more fun.  If the majority finds the sentence not correct, the player does not earn any points.  The first player to 200 points win!

A lot of the cards has words like balance, balances, balanced, balancing, and balanced diet while others have five words that are colors, five famous people, five animal names, or cards with places or things such as the playground, the monkey bars, the swing set, the ladder, and the merry-go-round.

The age recommendations are for ages 8 years old and up.  Our 9 year old daughter caught on pretty quickly.  We try to have a family game night at least once a week and this game has truly been a great addition to our game collection.  Our 4 1/2 year old son is still a little young for it but he is still involved when we play.  He’s on someone’s team and he thinks the things we come up with are pretty funny!  Some of the sentences that were said while playing had us rolling in laughter.  We always have a good time playing games but I can’t remember the last time we had this much fun!  Seriously!

It’s also been a great learning tool at the same time.  Our daughter only being 9 years old isn’t always grammatically correct in her sentences and You’ve Been Sentenced has been a help with that!  Not only is this game fabulous for family game night fun, it’s also great for get togethers and all us adults enjoy it without the kids as well.  We like to play in teams or even see who can come up with the sentence with the longest words first.  Just some of the sentences that we came up with were “Needy Napoleon figured out that (wild card) maddening pigs are bombing the monkey bars.”  Another one was “Spooky, pink F. Scott Fitzgerald filled the pool balancing famous Isaac Newton.”

Check it out below!

Depending on how the game is played and how many people are playing, it can take 30-45 minutes to play a game.  If you don’t want the game to last that long, you don’t have to play to 200 points.  Three to ten people are able to play this game.  If you are looking for a great game with tons of fun and learn a thing or two at the same time, this game is definitely for you!  There are also additional card decks that you can buy for even more fun.  Buy additional ones that fit your personality!  We have a lot of fun playing this game and it’s a great way to create good fun memories and a wonderful way to get laughing!  Go ahead and try it – “you’ve been sentenced!”
