We just finshed coloring and decorating our Easter eggs a few hours ago. We got a late start since everything had gotten kind of busy at the end of the week. HearthSong sent us a Crafty Egg Decorating Kit for my family to use and review.
The Crafty Egg Decorating Kit is pretty awesome! It is by far the best kit we have ever had for Easter. It came with tons of different things to decorate our eggs with. Included in the kit was an egg display tree, 3 eggs holders for painting, 3 paint brushes, 4 colors of food safe dye (red, blue, yellow and green), book of stickers (350 stickers), a wax crayon, decorating sticks, 2 egg dippers, glittery foam 3D alphabet stickers, adhesive gems (2 sheets with different sizes), glittery pom poms, feathers of all different colors, and adhesive googly eyes.
We started by coloring half our eggs by putting them in cups of the dye like you would with any regular egg coloring kit. We used 1/2 cup of water and half the bottle of each dye per cup and added 1 teaspoon of vinegar. The colors were very vibrant and colored the eggs better than I ever would have expected. I honestly have never used a coloring kit that made the color on the eggs that bright before. There are only 4 different colors in the kit but in the instructions, it tells you how to create other colors. We just stuck to the regular colors until we got into the actual painting of the eggs. It was just easier that way and we also wanted to make sure that we had enough coloring to mix together to make other colors when we did start painting them.
The egg holders that are used for painting worked fairly well. There is a plastic part with a spring on it that you pull out and place an egg between the two sides. The ends of this part are soft to protect the egg and we didn’t have a single egg crack using them. You do want to be gentle with them though. The base of these holders have shallow holes where you can pour a little of the dye in each one. This was when we started mixing colors to make new colors. To use the dye as paint, we just used the dye. We didn’t need to add anything to it at all.
They had tons of fun painting their eggs. When we were doing the actual painting, we only painted uncolored eggs. The red plastic parts can be turned to turn the egg too which I thought came in pretty handy. It was nice not having to touch the wet eggs getting dye all over your fingers. I ended up getting it on my fingers though but my kids didn’t – go figure. At first I didn’t think the dye was going to wash off but don’t worry. It came off just fine. I have no idea how it does on clothes because to my surprise, my kids actually stayed pretty clean. I was very surprised about that. They are my kids after all.
After the eggs were dry, we were able to decorate with all the goodies that came with the kit. The only thing that didn’t have adhesive were the pom poms and the feathers. There wasn’t anything included in the kit to remedy this but since I am a scrapbooker, I had double sided adhesive squares which worked perfectly. After we were finished, we set all our eggs on the display tree since we couldn’t put them back in the egg cartons with the feathers and pom poms on them. I had to carefully move the display onto a plate to put it in the refrigerator. You have to be careful when moving the display. It goes together very easily and stays together very nicely as long as it is sitting there. If you pull on one side, you may end up pulling it apart so you have to be careful moving it.
We had tons of fun and our kids loved it! They made animal eggs with the pom poms and had fun adding feathers, stickers, and we even have a few eggs that are covered in gems! We are going to have a fun time breaking these eggs open to eat them! HearthSong also sent us an egg pump that can be used to pump out the insides of the eggs so that there isn’t anything in them. It allows you to poke a hole in the bottom of the egg to pump everything out. The egg doesn’t have to go to waste either because you can drain it in a pan and go ahead and cook them. Using the pump, you can have empty eggs so you can keep them on display instead of refrigerating them.
Overall, we loved the Crafty Egg Decorating Kit! A special thanks to HearthSong for giving my family the opportunity to use their product!
