Glee Gum Make Your Own Gummies Kit Review and Giveaway {CLOSED}

My kids love kits where they can make things whether it’s arts and crafts or something they can eat.  We received the opportunity to try Glee Gum’s Make Your Own Gummies Kit and we enjoyed making our gummies!  The ingredients are all natural which is another thing that I love about it.  All of Glee Gum products are natural and on their website, you can even see how it’s all done from Tree to Glee.

“Available in Make Your Own Chocolate, Make Your Own Chewing Gum, and Make Your Own Gummies, these activity kits are all-natural, educational, and eco-friendly. With pre-packaged ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions, everyone aged 8 and up gets a real kick out of making candy from scratch. Focusing on the history behind and the origin of these candies, each kit is designed to captivate your interest, connect you to the global community, and create something yummy to eat in the process!”
What you may find interesting is that these gummies are made with seaweed powder and real seaweed!  Seaweed produces carrageenan and agar which works like gelatin which is found in a lot of gummy candy or even marshmallows are made with gelatin.  Using seaweed instead of gelatin can be done without harming the environment.  What I love about this kit, it can also be used as a learning tool.  I think it’s great that my kids can learn where all the ingredients come from, why seaweed is being used and that even though they may not think they have ever used anything with seaweed in it (I didn’t even think I had either) they have learned – and so have we, that seaweed can be found in many things we use on a regular basis such as toothpaste!
What I thought was really interesting is that included in the kit to be used when making your gummies is a real piece of seaweed.  I don’t believe I have ever seen seaweed myself and I know my kids haven’t so they thought that was pretty neat.  When you start making your gummies, you need to place the seaweed in a bowl of water so that it can soak while you prepare other things such as your molds which my kids found to be really fun!  There aren’t any actual molds included in the kit because you get to make your own!  There is a bag of molding starch that is to be spread out on a plate.

You choose your own things that you can find around your house to use as molds by pressing the items into the starch.  You will obviously want to make sure they are clean before using them.  When pressing the objects into the starch, you don’t need to apply too much pressure.  We had to start over a couple times until we figured that out.  Just a little pressure is all you need.

We used a heart for one of our molds.  If you look closely, you can see the molds in the picture below
We also used a straw to make worms and a plastic ring to make ring shaped gummies
I would personally recommend not making molds to close together.  If they are too close together, the starch may move a little causing a break in the walls of the mold right next to it.  They don’t have to be that far apart but we spaced ours out a little.  Don’t worry if you think you don’t have enough molds for the gummy mixture because there will be more left over after you fill your molds.  Unlike gelatin, seaweed gels can be re-heated and work the same unlike gelatin which is why candy making can be a little difficult.
The instructions are very easy to follow and they are pretty simple.  You can either use a stovetop or the microwave.  We opted for our microwave since our daughter was helping and besides that, it went a little quicker.  All you do is mix the powdered seaweed with a half cup water and place it in the microwave, or on the stove until the mixture foams up with the seaweed that you had soaking in water.  When the mixture is ready, you remove the seaweed.  While it was heating, the seaweed releases the carrageenan which is now in the mixture.  Then all you need to do is stir in the flavor powder and reheat until it foams again.  After that you stir again and then pour into your molds.

You should definitely use something that will allow easy pouring.  It is a mixture for gummy candy so it will thicken as it cools.  It was really easy to pour into the molds and I only made a little mess because of the way I started pouring it.  Most of the mixture even slid into the molds (I’m assuming it had to do with the starch that allowed it to).  If it gets to thick as you are pouring, heat it up a little more and they will still turn out like they are supposed to.  If you have any left over there’s nothing to worry about because the gummies harden and form there shape in only 10 minutes in the refrigerator and you can spread out the starch again, make more molds and use the leftover mixture after re-heating it!

After they harden, they are very easy to take out of the molds because all you do is pick them up off your plate.  You can use a damp cloth to wipe off extra starch.  When you are ready, you can place them in a bag along with the sour sugary coating that is included.  We added a touch of sugar because the sour coating was pretty sour.
I thought the flavor was pretty good too.  My husband liked them and our kids loved them.  I thought the texture was a little weird but I have a thing with textures.  I don’t know why but I am very picky about the texture of a lot of things.  My husband and our kids didn’t have a problem with it though and they thought they were pretty good!  Our daughter had a lot of fun making them and I thought it was pretty neat how they were made.  In my opinion, I also thought making them was also pretty educational in a way because of the information about seaweed and the story behind it.  Our daughter even wrote about her experience and what she learned and shared her story at school (a writing thing they do each week)!
The product was sent to me for free by the company for my use and review. I was not paid to write my review and my opinions are 100% my own.
