Going to back to school can be a stressful time for kids and as they get older, it can start to become a little scary. There are a lot of kids that have self esteem issues and dealing with everything going on around them such as school itself or other kids around them, and let’s face it, society can also be a factor. Jill Schoenberg’s Journal Buddies are great for helping build self esteem and confidence in kids and truly are a wonderful thing for kids to have whether they are a boy or a girl.
I became interested in Journal Buddies the first time I came across them and so glad that our daughter got a chance to use one for herself. Journal Buddies are not like your typical journal or diary that no one is supposed to see. Hence the title Journal Buddies. This is a journal that you actually complete with a buddy and can be completed with one buddy or multiple buddies. Before you hand off this magnificent book to your child, make sure you tell them yourself what makes them special and what makes them so wonderful. Something as simple as that can make a world of difference.
The point to Journal Buddies is to get your kids to learn about themselves and to learn about others. This grows confidence in themselves to be able to see the good in themselves and in others. We encouraged our daughter to write her entries each day with a different person as often as she can. This way, she can learn the good things about herself from lots of different people helping build her confidence even more. Hey, we all like hearing compliments about ourselves don’t we? And doesn’t it make you feel better when more than one person tells you so? In turn, our daughter can learn more about and even boost confidence in others herself. Journal Buddies helps everyone involved.
Due to our daughter’s disabilities, she lacks in social skills. She doesn’t take compliments well and she feels bad about herself if she feels she is doing something wrong such as work at school. When we received her copy of Journal Buddies, I had talked to her teacher about letting her take her journal to school and picking someone to journal with at recess or even picking one of her teachers or counsilors to be her journal buddy for the day. She imediately loved the idea behind Journal Buddies and agreed instantly. Ever since our daughter started taking it to and from school, we have noticed a big difference in her!
Journal Buddies are meant to be used every day for a month. There are 30 entry days and there are three parts to each entry. The first part asks you to list three qualities or traits that your buddy loves about you and then you list three qualities or traits that you love about you buddy. Our daughter enjoys coming home and telling us about her buddy of the day. There is also a focus word on the next page of the entry where you an your buddy can write about something or draw about something of what that specific word means to each of them. There are also blank pages and lined pages for creative journaling.
Before our daughter started Journal Buddies, she only had a few kids at school that she would talk about and even then she didn’t say much about them. Since she has started Journal Buddies, she has been talking about her friends rather than the other kids at school. It has definitely opened the door to more exciting things for her and she has a lot more confidence in herself and when it comes to approaching her peers. She has also improved with participating in class too which has been a problem since kindergarten. I would highly recommend Journal Buddies to anyone with kids!
