{Holiday Gift Guide} I See I Learn Children’s Book Series Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

“For happier, healthier, more confident children!”

I See I Learn is a children’s book series by Stuart J. Murphy and the first four books were recently released by Charlesbridge Publishing.  He is also the writer of (HarperCollins) MathStart series.  The I See I Learn series teaches are for pre-readers through second grade kids.  Stuart designed the series to help kids learn basic social, emotional, cognitive, and health and safety skills which are important in our young kids’ lives.  After receiving the opportunity to review these books, I believe they do.

In Percy Plays It Safe, your child gets to read about Percy on the playground.  Percy is a “monster” in this story and he likes to play rough and not as safe as he should be.  Instead of climbing the ladder to the slide, he climbs the slide and then does down head first.  He would bump into friends on the monkey bars, runs through the sandbox kicking sand everywhere, etc.  His freinds didn’t want to play with him and Percy ended up getting hurt.  The next day at the playground, he told everyone that he was a safe “monster”.  I think this story is a great way for kids to learn that playing safely is always best!
In Freda Plans a Picnic, Freda’s mom let’s her invite friends over for a picnic in the backyard.  This book teaches kids about following directions and what comes first and what comes next in s sequence.  After Freda invites her friends, she has to pack the basket, carry the basket, unpack, eat, and then clean up.  The illustrations are great for young kids to know exactly what is going on and I love the little pictures along the sides of the pages of what they are doing (pack, carry, unpack, eat, clean up) and those words are also bolded like certain words in the other books.  I think this is great because it really does give them a visual making learning sequencing easier.  It also teaches them that after they make a mess, teamwork is best!
Good Job, Ajay is about building confidence.  Ajay couldn’t throw a ball and when he tried everyone started laughing.  His friends reminded him how he learned to talk to his teacher because he was afraid to do so.  They helped him through his problem and he kept trying and gave him the confidence that he needed to keep practicing to be able to throw a ball.
Emma’s Friendwich teaches kids about social skills and how to make friends.  Emma is new to the neighborhood and didn’t have any friends.  She saw Freda and Percy playing next door and wanted to play.  The next day when she was sitting alone on her porch, she saw Freda playing with blocks but she didn’t know how to talk to her.  She thought to herself that if she smiled at her maybe she would smile back and she did.  Then she thought that if she asked to play Freda would let her.  She did of course but they didn’t talk to each other.  Then she thought that if she helped and shared then they could talk.  It worked!  And then Percy came over and Freda announced that they had a new friend!
I think this book is perfect for young kids that don’t know how to make friends especially when they start pre-school or kindergarten.  This story has helped our 4 1/2 year old son.  He doesn’t have too many problems playing with other kids but sometimes he needs a little nudge because he’s not sure about how to join in.  Once he gets there, he will start talking and playing but just needs a little push sometimes.
I really like these books and love the stories.  I love how they teach and promote social skills, health and safety skills, emotional skills, and cognitive skills.  The illustrations are brilliant with the bolded words and little pictures along the sides of the pages that help kids see and learn what is going on.  In my opinion I think the I See I Learn series by Stuart J. Murphy is great for any child’s library and we love what they are all about and what they can do for any child!  Charlesbridge Publishing is also be publishing two more titles each season so be sure to look out for them!
The next two titles that will be coming in February 2011 are Camille’s Team and Percy Gets Upset.
