Kids/Baby, Reviews/Giveaways

{Holiday Gift Guide} Peaceable Kingdom Press Review and Giveaway {CLOSED}

Both my 9 year old and 4 year old love playing board games together.  All three of my kids including Little E at only a year old absolutely loves books.  Books and games have always been a big part of my childhood and I like to keep that alive in my own kids.  What’s better than reading a book together or sitting down to play a game?!  I was given the opportunity to work with Peaceable Kingdom Press on a review and we were sent their Flippity Frogs Game and a set of their wonderful Numbers, Shapes, and Colors Board Books for our use and review.
Peaceable Kingdom Press also offers two other board book sets that include So Many Animals, and One Great Day! (Morning, Noon, and Night).  These are small chunky board books that are great for little hands to carry around and hold onto and are the perfect size for them to be able to turn the brightly colored pages.  Each book has 24 pages and on one side is an illustration and on the other side says what the picture is in only one or two words.  For example, in the Shapes book like the picture above, there is a page with a stop sign and the other page says octogon.  There are other shapes such as your usual square, triangle, circle, and so forth but I love how they included other shapes like the octogon, pentagon, oval, star, heart, etc.
As you can see in my picture above, the Colors book shows a simple illusration of something like the pink slippers and the other side simply says Pink Slippers.  What I also like about it is that the color word is printed on the same color page.  All the pages work this way.  In the Numbers book, your child sees a picture of a number of things like crayons.  There are seven crayons and on the other page it says 7 Crayons.  The numbers count up to 12.  The words in all the books are a great size for young ones to easily recognize and the illustrations make it easy for them to learn to read them.  I think they are a great way to get them to learn to read their color words, learn to recognize their numbers and learn some other simple words!
We have found them to be very durable as Little E likes to chew on everything sometimes and of course he loves to throw everything now so we have to watch out if we are in throwing distance these days!
My older kids love playing Flippity Frogs.  I think it’s one of the cutest games I have seen to tell the truth!  It’s a very simple game with very little rules and there isn’t a need for much instruction and very easy for young ones to play.  Our daughter is 9 years old and is somewhat older for this game as the recommended age is 4-8 years old.  She still likes playing though and I think it’s a great game for her to be able to play with her 4 year old brother.
The game is for 2-4 players and there are multiple ways you can play.  First, you start out by placing all the pieces on the game board which are really cute of course!  There are lilly pads, dragonflies on a log, turtles and fish.  There is even a tiny worm but we will get to that later.  All the pieces can be touching and overlapping each other.  It’s okay if some of them are hanging over the game board too.  Each player gets a colored seesaw flipper and matching little frog disk to flip onto to board making the frog land on the game pieces.
The players can keep flipping frogs until all the pieces are gone and the player with most pieces win.  There are also numbers on the other side of the pieces so players could also play to win my getting the most points.  There are other ways to play such as picking a random number, say 15 and players who reaches 15 points first wins!  See, lots of ways to play and I think Flippity Frogs allows kids to be creative in the way that they play this game.  Our son for some reason wants to get all the lilly pads no matter what and U have no idea why!
The little worm piece says You Win on the back so if your kids choose to use this piece, they can set it up so that if a player lands on it, they automatically win.  The little worm is very hard to land on though because it is so small.  Some of the pieces also have Try Again and the player gets to go again.  Flippity Frogs teaches a lot of skills such as taking turns, hand-eye coordination, some reading, math, reasoning and spatial relations.  This game is not suitable for children under 3 years old.
The game pieces are made of a very durable, strong board (similar to a board book) and they are also glossy.  The game is definitely made to last and I don’t have any doubts about that.  I think it’s a really fun game and Peaceable Kingdom Press definitely has great educational quality products for any kid to enjoy!
