Moon Dough Magic Zoo by Spin Master Review

My kids have been wanting Moon Dough ever since the first time they saw it.  I was actually pretty interested in how it works and what it was like myself.  I have to give a big thanks to Spin Master for letting my kids try it out for themselves!  I was sent their Moon Dough Magic Zoo playset for our use and review.

The Moon Dough Magic Zoo comes with a molding zoo which consists of an archway with a turning crank on top of it.  You will have to attach it but it is really easy to do.  There is a “magic cage” that gets placed in the middle of the arch.  The “magic cage opens all the way up so that you can change out the molding plates which includes a bear, gorilla and a penguin.  The only other thing that requires any assembly is the base that needs to be attached to the bottom of the archway.  There are some stickers to be placed which is pretty self explanatory.  Also included in the set are 2 winding walkers and a fence mold.

With the three animal molds and the fence mold, your kids can create their own little zoo!  My kids absolutely love playing with it.  There are three colors of the dough that come in white, purple and orange.  There is more white than the other colors which is fine because my daughter loves making a really long fence.  After watching my kids play with it, I think the smaller amounts of colored dough ends up creating 3 or 4 animals.

The texture of the dough and the way it molded together was interesting to say the least.  It looked pretty crumbly and to my amazement molds together really well!  It is very lightweight and the feel of it when rolled into a ball kind of felt like touching crafting foam.  I think it’s really neat.  I guess if astronauts had some kind of molding dough on their trip, this is what it would look like.

Making the animals is really easy.  All you have to do is fill both sides of the mold and close up the “magic cage” and snap it closed.  Then attach it to the middle of the archway.

Place one of the winder walkers at the bottom of the arch under the “magic cage” and turn the crank at the top.  As the crank is being turned, the winder walker is winding up but is locked into place.  At the same time, the “magic cage” is moving down over the winder walker.  Once the mold is all the way down with the winder walker inside, the cage opens up releasing the winder walker as the animal your child just created!

The animal is released and walks away – literally!

As you can see in my picture above, there is some excess dough.   It is really easy to remove.  I was really impressed by this because my kids have played with many different kinds of molding dough (generally speaking) and there are times that removing excess dough just isn’t as easy as it should be.  The consistency and texture of the Moon Dough makes this very, very easy to do.  The first couple times my kids tried the crank, it had a couple issues and wouldn’t work exactly right.  I think this was ONLY because it was the first time it was played with and had a few kinks to work out because after that, it worked every time without a single problem again.

My kids love playing with Moon Dough because the dough comes out of the molds effortlessly.  It doesn’t stick to the molds at all and molds so well that every little detail of the molds come out in the dough so gret that the fences doesn’t even look like they are made of dough.  I thought it was really neat myself.  Moon Dough isn’t sticky at all.  I happen to think that it’s also easier to clean up than other molding dough – honestly, I think it’s the easiest dough I have ever cleaned up.  It doesn’t get completely stuck in my carpet when it gets smashed on the floor!

The best thing about Moon Dough is that it NEVER DRIES OUT!  I tested this claim for myself and left some out overnight.  I even used a really small amount because with other molding doughs, the smaller the amount, the quicker it dries.  I am telling you, it does NOT dry out!!!  Absolutely amazing and in my opinion, Moon Dough gets two thumbs up from this mom!  It’s definitely “Magical Molding Dough”!

Never dries out, hypo-allergenic, wheat free

  1. Sounds like a lot of fun! I have had other moms tell me it makes a huge mess though, so I’ve always been cautious to even consider it!

  2. Great review! I’m going to have to get some Moon Dough this weekend for my daughter. She’s almost 3 and loves molding dough (even homemade), but it’s so messy! 🙂

    Thanks Again,
