As a family, we love spending time outdoors and that includes camping! We even camp in our own backyard since we have three kids at ages 10, 6, and 2 years old. They love camping in the backyard. We cook hotdogs, make s’mores and have a great time. The only thing that I never look forward to is putting up the tent. There are so many different poles to attach and no matter how many times we have put our tents up, they are still frustrating! I was thrilled to work with LightSpeed on a review and was very interested in how well and easy thier tents are to set up. Of course I was eager to try one because I kept thinking to myself, there’s no way a tent can be set up that easy – especially a family size tent! Boy was I WRONG!!

I was sent a Periapsis 4 which is a 4 person tent. It’s the perfect size for us even though there are 5 of us all together!

“The Periapsis series utilize the patented Lightspeed® pole system for amazingly quick tent setup. One additional pole provides support for the dual-peak rainfly that fully covers both side walls. A generously sized front door opens to reveal two matching mesh windows on the sides and a zippered privacy window on the rear wall. The Periapsis offers the perfect compromise between ventilation and protection from the elements.”
All of the poles are attached to the Periapsis 4 so there aren’t any that you need to slide into place to form the tent. It’s all done for you! There is one pole that will be used to form the rainfly on the top of the tent which can be used with or without. Even that is very simple to do. The Periapsis is rolled compactly and comes with a carrying bag that will also hold the rainfly, tent stakes, and the pole for the rainfly.
The setup is very simple. All you have to do is unroll it and flatten it out and make sure all the corners are folded out. The pole structure joints lock into place. The middle section constists of all the pole parts meeting in the middle of the tent. It’s as simple as pushing a button (not that there is an actual button) for the whole structure to pop into place forming the tent. In less than 2 minutes, your tent is set up – SERIOUSLY!!! All that’s left to do, is stake it to the ground at all 4 corners (there are loops to put the stakes through) and then attach the rainfly. Folding out the single pole that comes with it, you slide it in at one ends of the rainfly, sit the pole on the middle part of the plastic piece at the top of the tent and then slide to pole in place on the other end of the rainfly. Then take all four corners of the rainfly and attach each corner to the bottom of the tent with the durable plastic hooks that are attached. Wha-la! You are done!
Now you are ready for some family fun in the matter of minutes. The Periapsis 4 is so easy to set up, it’s unbelievable. Packing it all up after use is such a breeze it’s crazy! I love the “double door” as my son calls it. There is a zipper screen and also a zipper cover so you have double protection and if you just want to zip up the screen only to keep the bugs out, you can do so. I love that the door covers the whole front of the tent so there isn’t any problems getting in or out. There are also three windows with a screen and a complete cover as well for double protection and all three windows and doors have little hooks so that you can roll up the flaps and keep them out of the way.
The rainfly is absolutely great! We actually had a rain later in the day when we had the tent still set up which was perfect because then we could find out how well it works against the rain. The rain just rolled off the rainfly keeping water out of the windows on the sides and back window and door. The design keep water out and prevents leaking. It’a also great against the wind and makes for a great shelter from it! Blocks the wind really well and we found that the Periapsis 4 not only keeps you warm but is also very breathable! Another thing that I love about it is that there is also a storage pocket inside so that you can store your little things inside the tent while you are in there.
It’s also really lightweight too. Our 6 year old can even carry the bag with the tent all folded up inside himself so if you have a bit of a hike to get to your campsite, you don’t have to worry about carrying something overly heavy! Bottom line, the Periapsis 4 fits four but is large enough for my husband and I and our 3 kids, weather resistant, the easiest tent I have ever put up, lightweight and very breathable! The Periapsis 4 from LightSpeed gets 10 thumbs up from my family!
