My oldest loves these Neon Street Rollers. All you have to do is strap them on your shoes and go! I was recently asked if my family would like to try out Neon Street Rollers. My boys were pretty excited about it. I was sent a free pair in exchange for my honest review. When they arrived they couldn’t wait to try them out. Of course it happened to be raining that day so we had to wait a couple days.
So what exactly are Neon Street Rollers?
Well, they are skates that you can easily strap on to your shoes and go. They are recommended for ages 6 years and older which I agree with. For one thing, if your child’s feet are too small, they aren’t going to work out very well. These fit any size shoe probably from about the average size a 6 year old would wear and on up.
The wheels light up too. That’s where they get the Neon name because they the LED lights in the wheels do look a like neon lights. The blue ones we got is a pretty blue. They do not require batteries. Max weight for these are 132 pounds.
Strap the on your shoes and go!
They were really easy to put on. The bottom of them that the shoe sits in, is really durable. There is a button on the back that you can press in to pull each roller to make them wider. Then after the shoe is in with the heel all the way against the back of them, you can press them back together to fit snug around the shoe. We found that they stay snug too. You can hear slight clicking sounds when your are adjusting them and they do stay in place.
I love the strap that goes over the top of the shoe. The strap is also adjustable if you need adjusting. But you just stretch it over the shoe and clip it to the other side of the roller. The strap also has a flexible rubber piece that covers shoe laces which I appreciate. That way shoes don’t come untied and get tangled in the wheels. And of course because it’s a flexible piece, they feel comfortable while moving your feet. At least that’s what my boys said.
Taking them for a spin
These rollers only have two wheels at the back of the feet unlike traditional skates. This is another reason why I like the age recommendation because they might take a bit of time to get used to. Our younger son (he’s 8), hasn’t really mastered them yet. He doesn’t like regular roller skates but he did say he likes these even though he still hasn’t quite figured them out yet. That’s because he can still walk in them.
Too be able to move on the wheels, you have to be able to keep your toes or front half of your feet off the ground to be able to be on the wheels alone. Some may need some practice at it. But he did figure out how to move a little on the wheels and then put his feet back down. So as he’s walking, he will scoot along every once in a while and then stop himself. He thinks it’s a “cool way to walk”.
Final Thoughts…
Our older son (now 12) was able to figure them out a little easier. He can walk, skate and turn with ease. He can even walk and skate at the same time like his little brother does but faster. Usually he has one foot on the wheels, pushes off with the other foot and plants his foot on the wheels he pushed off with to get going. He thinks they are pretty cool too.
The wheels roll and skate pretty well too. We didn’t have any issues rolling over any little pebbles but with anything with wheels like this, I would suggest not using them in a really pebbly or rocky area.
The boys also love that these are so easy to take with them to the park or what-not. They take them to soccer practice too. Sometimes they both have practice at the same time but sometimes they don’t. The one that doesn’t likes to have them to go skate around on the blacktop during practice. We think they are pretty cool!
